The fashion industry is notoriously one of the biggest polluters on the planet, and I refused to let my LGBTQ+ and disability-rights designs end up in a landfill six months after being printed.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">\u200bWhile I believe no new product can be completely impact-free, I knew I could work to offset those impacts by choosing a better way to build. As a Textile Design graduate, I am incredibly picky about fabric and longevity; I needed a partner that matched my ethics without requiring the massive overheads of traditional manufacturing.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">\u200bThis led me to Teemill. Their circular approach means I make a little less profit per product compared to cheaper, less ethical suppliers, but I sleep better knowing my brand isn't contributing to the crisis it critiques.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">\u200bHere is why their environmental stance made them the only choice for my sustainable protest clothing:<\/span><\/p><p><strong><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">\u200b1. Each garment has a QR code on the wash tag. When it\u2019s worn out, you can scan it, send it back (for free in many cases!), and Teemill will spin those old fibers into brand new yarn.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">\u200bThe Result: Your old favorite shirt becomes part of a new one, staying out of the ocean and out of the bin\u2026 and you get a discount on your next purchase too!<\/span><\/p><p><strong><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">\u200b2. Plants, Not Plastic<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">A <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thersa.org\/reports\/fast-fashions-plastic-problem\/)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\"><u>Royal Society for the Arts (RSA) study<\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\"> of 10,000 items from Boohoo, PrettyLittleThing, Missguided, and ASOS found that nearly half (49%) of products were made entirely from new plastics. Globally, it's estimated that up to 69% of clothing contains it\u2026 and every time these items are washed, they shed microplastics into our water.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/><img src=\"https:\/\/images.podos.io\/ht9ppen7o6xzo3xfl3eahwod13yxucplgkjn9g2okjufm5jz.png.png?w=1140&amp;project=polite-defiance-442228&amp;v=2\" alt=\"Info graphic: 35% of all microplastics in the ocean come from the washing if synthetic textiles - all clothing at Polite Defiance is made from 100% organic cotton, avoiding this issue.\" title=\"Info graphic: 35% of all microplastics in the ocean come from the washing if synthetic textiles - all clothing at Polite Defiance is made from 100% organic cotton, avoiding this issue.\" \/><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">This is where Temill shines:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li><p>Teemill fashion products are made from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/global-standard.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>100% GOTS-certified<\/u><\/a> organic cotton.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><\/li><li><p><\/p><\/li><li><p>\u200bNo toxic pesticides are used, better for the soil and the farmers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><\/li><li><p><\/p><\/li><li><p>\u200bWater-efficient processes: the cotton is grown in North India, where monsoon rains provide almost all the water needed, rather than depleting local drinking supplies.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p><\/p><\/li><li><p>They use \u200bvegan water based inks that are <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oeko-tex.com\/en\/our-standards\/oeko-tex-standard-100\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Oeko-Tex certified<\/u><\/a>, meaning no nasty chemicals are being washed into the ecosystem either.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">So not only do they not use plastics, they think of the journey from seed onwards. And ensure they minimise their impact on the planet.<\/span><\/p><p><strong><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">\u200b3. Powered by the Sun and Wind<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">\u200bManufacturing usually requires a massive amount of energy. By choosing Teemill, we are actively supporting a transition away from fossil fuels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">\u200b4. Zero Waste (Print on Demand)<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">\u200bOne of the biggest issues in fast fashion is deadstock\u2026 unsold garments that are burned or buried every year because they didn't sell.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">\u200bBecause Teemill is a Print on Demand model, your items don't exist until you order them. I don't have warehouses full of wasted fabric. I only make what is needed, exactly when it\u2019s needed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">So\u2026 what\u2019s the catch?<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">Now as I mentioned above, I don't believe any brand can produce fashion items without having at least a little impact on the environment.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">I looked into the full journey, from seed to garment and Teemill garments, once manufactured, still have to get from India to Teemill printing houses\u2026 this will obviously have an impact on the environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">What I like though, is they still make the best choices available, opting for sea freight over air travel. Shipping by sea is significantly more carbon-efficient, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/climateactionaccelerator.org\/solutions\/sea_freight\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\"><u>costing 19gCO\u00b2 emissions per tonne-km, compared to air shipping which produces a whopping 1054gCO\u00b2 per tonne-km<\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">.<\/span><br \/><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">Don't get me wrong, it's not perfect\u2026 but at least by shipping this way, with printing, finishing, packing and posting being completed locally, it means these garments only make one overseas voyage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">Given that according to <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ethicalconsumer.org\/fashion-clothing\/fashion-supply-chains\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\"><u>Ethical Consumer<\/u><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">,\u00a0a typical fashion item makes multiple journeys (with components like zips, buttons and sewing cotton being shipped from multiple countries), one journey is pretty good going.\u00a0<\/span><br \/><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">Not only this, Teemill can trace all of their materials and components, using recycled components where possible, and they more than offset the impact of this one journey in multiple ways through the supply chain.<\/span><br \/><\/p><p><strong><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">\u200bMaking Entrepreneurship Possible<\/span><\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-family:Arial, sans-serif;\">\u200bBeyond the ethics, Teemill made it possible for me, with no start-up funds, to open a business. Without this model, Polite Defiance wouldn't exist.
